At 20 years old, Brittney LaCombe never expected to become the head of her family’s household. That all changed the weekend of May 8, 2011. Britney took a camping trip with her mother and two siblings for Mother’s Day.  When her mother started experiencing severe foot pain, Britney called 911 and had her mother sent to the nearest hospital. Doctors initially thought she had a case of cellulitis and kept her over night as a precaution. Less than 10 hours after leaving with her two sisters, Britney received a call from the hospital saying that her mother was unresponsive.  Despite the doctors’ best efforts to revive her, Britney’s mother passed away on May 9, 2011 due to a pulmonary embolism. In a matter of months Britney and her sisters found themselves having the bank foreclose on their parent’s house, falling behind on bills, and having to rely on assistance from friends and family just to get by.
